The Music School

Music School

We are now finalising the plans in the lead up to our next major development project, the Music School. Bringing music to the heart of the College, the new Music School will bring significant benefits to pupils of all three schools, to staff and audiences, and could also provide a performance and rehearsal space for the wider musical community in Brighton.

A tailored facility such as this will open up a world of musical opportunities. Creating a bespoke, professional music-making environment will inspire and enthuse our young musicians, and allow them to learn and develop in facilities which reflect their musical excellence.

Eric Parry Architects have been appointed to design the new building, as a contemporary facility, in sympathy with adjacent listed buildings, and to make the most of the limited available space.

The new Music School will provide:

  • A spectacular double-height recital room, with a seating capacity of 150, providing a much needed space for rehearsal and performance;
  • Additional music practice and teaching rooms;
  • A Seminar Room for teaching, private study and listening;
  • An ICT Room with space for 24 pupils;
  • A Music Library for storage of all orchestra, choral, instrumental and band music;
  • A Recording Control Room, with facilities which will enable us to offer Music Technology at A level;
  • A Percussion and Rock Room, connected to the Recording Control Room;
  • Offices for the Director of Music, Assistant Director and Music Administrator;
  • Storage space for musical instruments.

It is envisaged that that the planning application for the development will be submitted in the summer of 2012. Following its approval, the site will be cleared over the summer holidays, in preparation for building works the following summer.

The total estimated cost for the Music School is £6 million, and the project will be funded through a combination of College reserves and philanthropic gifts.  We hope to raise half of the total cost through donations, grants and sponsorship.  The more we are able to raise for the Music School, the more children will be able to benefit from the facility.

We are asking those who are close to Brighton College, and who share our vision for the future of the school, to please consider supporting our Music School development.
