Foundation Scholarships

The Foundation Scholarship scheme offers Brighton College's first class education to deserving pupils who have strong academic potential but come from disadvantaged areas and backgrounds, and whose parents are unable to afford the fees. Two to three fully funded Sixth Form places are awarded each year, preparing talented young people for entry into the UK's top universities, and providing life-changing opportunities.
The scheme was established in September 2007, as the Kingsford Scholarship Programme, in partnership with Kingsford Community School, an inner city secondary comprehensive school in a deprived area in Beckton, East London. In 2011 Brighton College expanded the programme, taking two pupils from Patcham High School, a Brighton comprehensive. The selection process is rigorous, with places offered subject to satisfactory results at GCSE, and after presentations and interviews at the College.
The scheme has been an unequivocal success, with all eight graduating Foundation Scholars achieving places at their chosen universities, and two now studying for degrees at Oxford and Cambridge. Benefits of the scheme extend far beyond the classroom, and all Scholars are keen participants in sports, drama and the arts. The predominantly middle class student body at Brighton College is enriched by the Scholars, and aspirations are raised at Kingsford and Patcham Schools, where the scholarships are viewed as prizes worth having.
The programme was launched with funding from HSBC, who have continued to part-fund places through their Scholarship Programme, and we are very grateful to those Trusts and individuals who have also supported the initiative. Further committed funding would enable us to secure the programme in future years and to expand the number and types of scholarships offered. This might include places for younger pupils entering the College at age 11 or 13, or those from disadvantaged backgrounds who show exceptional sporting or musical ability, and assistance for existing pupils whose families, through changed circumstances, may struggle to continue to fund their children's education.
