Making Your Will

Types of Legacy

If you are considering a legacy to Brighton College, there are a number of different types of legacy that you can make:

  • Residuary legacy: this is the balance of your estate once all other gifts and expenses have been deducted. You can leave the entire residue to one beneficiary (a person or a charity for example) or it can be divided among a number of beneficiaries. An important aspect of residuary legacies is that they do not lose their value over time.
  • Pecuniary legacy: this is a fixed sum of money. When making this sort of legacy it is well worth reviewing your will regularly, as specific amounts will decrease in value over time.  Alternatively you can index-link the sum to inflation, so that the value of the bequest remains as originally intended.
  • Specific bequest: this is an individual item of value such as a property or an item of jewellery. It may be that you wish us to add an item to our collections; if this is the case, please do discuss this with us before making your will.
  • Reversionary bequest: a gift allowing you to leave assets to the College whilst giving a named person the benefit of the assets during his or her lifetime.

Wording for Your Will

It is very easy to include a bequest to Brighton College in your Will. One of the phrases below can be inserted; alternatively if you have already drawn up a Will, you may add a bequest as a Codicil .

The following wording can be used as a guide, but we strongly recommend that you seek professional legal advice.

A residuary legacy:

I give to Brighton College, Eastern Road, Brighton, BN2 0AL (Registered Charity Number 307061)  xx% / all of the residue of my estate for its general purposes.

  A pecuniary legacy:

I give to Brighton College, Eastern Road, Brighton, BN2 0AL (Registered Charity Number 307061)   the sum of £x for its general purposes.

Supporting specific areas of our work

Most people choose to support the College's work as a whole. However, if you would like to support a specific area, we suggest the following wording.
