College Open Mornings
International links
In addition to the residential Geography course at Arundel for St Andrew's Primary School that he runs, the Head of Geography and former Sussex fast bowler, John Spencer has forged links with two schools in Nepal for many years and he spent another three weeks over Easter teaching Geography and English in the SOS charity school in Surkhet. The £600 that he took with him from the Mathraswadi fund that he regularly contributes to by speaking at cricket dinners across the country has been used to buy a digital camera and much needed photocopier for the school. Another £1000 has also been sent to a government school in Nepal, which will enhance the facilities for the school and the children's education. Over £1000 from the fund will go towards the Worli shanty town project in Mumbai again this year with the money specifically going towards nursery education and a primary public health clinic for children. On the college's third well established international projects, twelve Sixth Formers spent two weeks over the summer in Sri Lanka working with children in the eight "Extra Cover" jungle schools. The pupils spent their time painting murals, playing sports, planting tea, repairing walls, and teaching English all under the careful watch of Mr Hawkes and Ms Langhorne. Since the 2004 tsunami claimed 30,000 lives in Sri Lanka, Extra Cover, in association with the College, has built 39 houses for survivors, furnished a hospital with clean mattresses, and provided help, in the form of food, clean water, educational equipment, shoes, games and much more, for hundreds of school children across the country.
