College Open Mornings
Biology
Biology in the Third Form is heavily centred on practical work and challenging the pupils, as we believe this approach encourages a true love of learning Biology.
Lower Third (Year 7)
During the Lower Third, pupils continue through Key Stage 3, but are taught in greater depth than is required. This enables us to develop good Biologists, who have a passion and interest for the subject. The topics which are studied are:
- Cells, microscopes and magnification,
- Feeding, diet and digestion,
- The nervous system and the senses,
- Respiration,
- Reproduction.
The lessons are designed to include as much practical work as possible, enabling pupils to develop essential Laboratory skills from a young age. These skills will be of benefit to them at GCSE and A-Level.
Upper Third (Year 8)
In the Upper Third, pupils complete the materials required for Key Stage 3, but are also extended well beyond the restrictions of the specification; at times touching on A-Level materials. This allows us to develop better scientists with a passion for the subject, without fear of new, complex, ideas. The topics studied this year are:
- Ecology and the Environment,
- Variation and Inheritance,
- Enzymes.
The focus of lessons remains heavily practical, but is also based around developing inquisitive scientists.
Trips and Extra-Curricular
We run Dissection Club, as our portion of Science Club, where pupils get the opportunity to dissect a huge range of organs and animals, from bulls eyes to cat-fish.
This year the Science Department take the Third Form to Herstmonceux Observatory for a day of fun science in the Lent Term. This gives an opportunity for team building, challenges, lateral thinking and hands on science.
