Geography

Geography is taught within the Lower and Upper Third 'Story of our Land' syllabus which integrates Geography, History and Religious Studies.

Lower Third (Year 7)

In the Lower Third (Year 7), those topics taught with a geographical theme include:

  • Settlement Form: The factors encouraging the formation of nucleated and dispersed settlement.
  • Site and Situation of Settlement: Looking at site and situation factors influencing Anglo-Saxon and Viking choice of settlement location.
  • Plate Tectonics: The study of earthquake formation and impacts on humans and the environments.
  • Map skills: Developing key map skills; grid references, distances, direction, interpreting Ordnance Survey maps of different scales.

Upper Third (Year 8)

In the Upper Third (Year 8), those topics taught with a geographical theme include:

  • Geology, Volcanoes & Landscape:What makes Britain's landscape distinctive and how has geology influenced our landscape? How are volcanoes formed and the historic volcanic activity of Britain.
  • Rivers: Formation of river landforms & the study of contrasting river case studies. Impact of flooding on both humans and the natural environment.
  • The Black Death: Historical-geography; a consideration of the causes, spread & impact on population levels. Also involves considering the associated change in agriculture.
  • Coasts: Coastal processes and the formation of coastal landforms. Fieldtrip to Birling gap in order to better understand coastal erosion and the advantages and disadvantages of potential coastal defence mechanisms.
  • Immigration: Patterns of immigration in and out of Britain and the impact of migration on Britain both in the past and present.
  • Tourism: Growth of tourism in coastal resorts like Brighton. Tourist models and positive and negative impacts of tourism.
