EAL
Upon arrival, overseas pupils are tested to determine their level and need for EAL, and lessons are timetabled accordingly. Pupils are taught in small groups or on a one-to-one basis. Most pupils have 2-3 lessons per week in the EAL Department. Fourth and fifth form pupils (Years 9-11) normally have EAL in place of another foreign language.
Pupils in fourth and fifth form follow an Intermediate or Upper Intermediate level English language course, focusing on the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening, in addition to intensive grammar and vocabulary work. There are regular tests and an internal examination. In addition to this, the EAL department provides support with curriculum subjects. This is determined largely by pupils' needs, and may include helping plan and correct essays, or teaching subject-specific vocabulary. We also work very closely with the English Department to support pupils throughout their English GCSE course, particularly with more challenging areas such as poetry or Shakespearean plays.
