ICT
Fourth Form (Year 9)
The emphasis in year 9 is cross curricular, incorporating skills at the request of a range of departments.
The first task requires pupils to recite the war poem "Anthem for doomed youth", which is part of the English scheme of work into a sound editing package. A range of appropriate background sounds are layered onto the recitation to produce a sound file that depicts the mood of the poem. This sound file is then incorporated into a presentation, which includes a range of images from the first world war to produce a revision guide for this topic, which they study as part of their year 9 History course. The presentation includes a quiz on the key events of World War I.
The emphasis moves onto Mathematics with pupils using a spreadsheet to model a range of situations, incorporating a range of mathematical operators and functions. This leads onto the use of distance - time graphs which the pupils study in their physics lessons.
A new topic leading onto a Level 1 qualification, will be electronic safety, which highlights a range of good practice whilst ICT.
The GCSE Course
This course prepares pupils for a world increasingly dominated by the use of ICT, which influence every aspect of everyday life.
Syllabus
This is an exciting new GCSE ICT specification that includes familiar and popular aspects of previous GCSE ICT specifications.
It provides learners with fantastic opportunities to work with a variety of technologies, giving them greater choice and making it even more enjoyable for them to study. The qualification has been designed so that learners will be digitally literate, with an up-to-date understanding of the digital world around them.
Assessment
- Unit B061: ICT in today's world - Written
paper or computer-based test (20%)
Learners study a range of ICT systems, as used in the home, at school and in society. Learners need to be aware of current and emerging technologies and their impact on themselves and others. The Teachers' Handbook clearly explains what learners will need to know. - Unit B062: Practical applications in ICT -
Controlled assessment (30%)
Learners will select from a range of set tasks which will enable them to demonstrate their practical ICT ability. - Unit B063: ICT in context - Written paper or
computer-based test (20%)
Learners study a range of ICT systems, components, technologies and applications. The question paper will be based on pre-release material, relating to specified organisation(s) and its/their use of ICT. - Unit B064: Creative use of ICT - Controlled
assessment (30%)
Learners study a range of creative software applications in order to create a solution to a given task. They are required to analyse the problem as well as designing, developing, testing and evaluating the solution. Learners should be able to develop either a website, a presentation or a computer game.
or - Unit B065: Coding a solution - Controlled
assessment (30%)
There will be a scenario set by OCR within which learners should be able to identify a potential coded solution to a problem using basic programming techniques. The scenario will be sufficiently open to allow a variety of viable solutions.
