Mathematics
All pupils study the Edexcel Linear 1MAO GCSE course, which consists of two papers worth 50% each. They are setted immediately based on their year 8 entry performance, which is often in a form of Common Entrance or Scholarship examination. The key aim of the department is to enable all our pupils to enjoy and flourish in Mathematics at their requistite level, whether it is striving for an A grade for the lower set pupils or extending the breadth of their knowledge in two Additional Mathematics courses for the top sets. A large proportion of our pupils go on to study A Level Mathematics or Further Mathematics courses.
Fourth Form (Year 9)
Pupils study four periods per week and commence immediately on to the GCSE course, depending on their entry level. Naturally much of the first part of the year is for pupils to settle into their level and consolidate Core skills, particualrly in Algebra and Numeracy. All pupils are exposed to more abstract problem solving and invetsigative work. We are conscious to not drill too much, ensuring that learning is diverse in style and encourages pupils to think laterally.
Lower Fifth (Year 10)
At this stage the usual 8 sets are broadly working at two paces. The top three sets work towards taking their GCSE examination in the summer and the other sets cover the GCSE over either a four term or two year period. It is our intention that the top set pupils all gain an A* grade in the summer to prepare them for extension work in year 11, which often leads to pupils taking Mathematics to A Level and beyond.
Upper Fifth (Year 11)
All sets strive to achieve a minimum of an A grade at GCSE. The department support system is comprehensive for the less confident pupils. We have small set sizes, regular Clinics on offer, an individual teacher and able sixth form pupil help for the most needy. The top sets cover the OCR Additional Mathematics course, which covers many A level concepts and UCAS points can be gained from it. We have also introduced a slightly less rigorous AQA IGCSE Further Mathematics course, which counts as a separate GCSE grade. Both courses are an ideal bridge towards A Level study and sixth form pupils appreciate having covered these courses.
Extra Curricular
We enter a large proportion of our pupils for the Intermediate Maths Challenges and, in recent years, our participation and success levels have increased noticeably. We have also recently entered the National Team Challenge competition, which challenges our most dynamic mathematicians in an entertaining way.
