Art
A-level Course
For AS and A2 at Brighton College, we follow the Oxford Cambridge and RSA (OCR) Fine Art qualification.
Our singular success in these courses is underlined by our strong emphasis on drawing, presented in a lively, versatile and imaginative manner, parallel to pursuing individual themes. Painting, drawing and sculpture form the backbone of our disciplines and an appreciation and understanding of historical and contemporary issues relating to pupils' projects is indispensable in this success.
Our success in these courses is reflected in our examination results, with every pupil earning an A* or A grade at A-level in 2011. Annual External Moderators are usually overjoyed by the range, quality and dedication of pupils in the pursuit of making Art. In 2011, the work of eight A-level pupils was selected for OCR's National Touring Exhibition of exemplar work.
Each year, pupils continue from studying Art at A-level to Foundation Courses in the discipline, or to undergraduate study on university courses around the UK. There are currently nine Old Brightonians at university reading History of Art, and seven Old Brightonians studying Architecture.
Lower 6th (Year 12)
Two modules are taken in the Lower 6th: the Coursework Project is completed over the course of the academic year, with the Controlled Assessment taken in Summer Term.
Over the course of the year, we take our pupils on a variety of trips to galleries and exhibitions, with a three-day summer reading trip to continental Europe.
Upper 6th (Year 13)
In the Upper 6th, pupils complete a Personal Study, alongside another Controlled Assessment. These modules, combined with those completed in the Lower 6th, contribute towards the final A-level grade.
