A-level Course

Lower 6th (Year 12)

At present we have 61 pupils in 4 sets. They follow the AQA Specification B using 8 lessons of 35 minutes each. PHYB1 is taken in January and PHYB2 and PHYB3 in May and June.

PHYB1 - Harmony and structure in the universe

This unit is separated into two modules:

  • Module 1 - The World of Music
  • Module 2 - From Quarks to Quasars

PHYB2 - Physics keeps us going

The two modules covered in this unit are:

  • Module 1 - Moving people, people moving
  • Module 2 - Energy and the environment

PHB3T - Investigative and practical skills in AS Physics

This is the practical element of the course, which consists of a centre assessed practical examination (ISA) and an ongoing assessment of the pupils' practical skills (PSA).

In addition, the Lower Sixth have the opportunity to attend a programme of reading trips. Recent trips have included a visit to the Royal Observatory in Greenwich and a visit to Thorpe Park, which inlcudes a talk behind the Physics of the rides.

Upper 6th (Year 13)

We are following the AQA Specification B. We currently have 33 pupils in three sets. Module 4 is taken in January; Modules 5 and 6 are taken in May and June. There is also the possibility of retaking Module 4.

PHYB4 -Physics inside and out

This unit is separated into three modules:

  • Module 1 - Experiences out of this world
  • Module 2 - What goes around comes around
  • Module 3 - Imaging the invisible

PHYB5 - Energy under the microscope

The three modules covered in this unit are:

  • Module 1 - Matter under the microscope
  • Module 2 - Breaking matter down
  • Module 3 - Energy from the nucleus

PHB6T - Investigative and practical skills in A2 Physics

This is the practical element of the A2 course, which consists of a centre assessed practical examination (ISA) and an ongoing assessment of the pupils' practical skills (PSA).
