Chapel

The founding fathers of Brighton College stated that their intention was to provide "a sound Religious, Classical, Mathematical and General Education, in conformity with the doctrine of the Church of England", and since its inception, the school has been deeply proud of its Anglican heritage. Today it welcomes children of all faiths and none, with the principles of kindness, tolerance and love that are at the root of the Christian message underpinning all that we do.
The Chapel itself is the heart and at the heart of Brighton College. The magnificent nineteenth-century building in the College's Front Quad, with its glorious stained glass windows, is used every weekday by pupils from one or more of the schools for services, assemblies, choir practices or simply as a large meeting space. There are also several services throughout the year on weekends, ranging from Harvest Festivals to Carol Services, Choral Eucharists to Choral Evensongs. Midnight Mass at Brighton College has now developed into a much-loved tradition, with the congregation running into the hundreds.
A place for quiet reflection, the Chapel doors are always open for those who would like to take time out from the business of their day to sit peacefully for a moment's undisturbed contemplation. You will always be welcome here.
The Chapel plays host to College pupils on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday mornings between 8.35 and 8.55am. College assembly takes place on a Monday, while the services on Tuesday (for the Lower and Middle Schools) and Thursday (for the Sixth Form) reflect the religious and spiritual diversity of the pupil and staff body, and range from addresses by leaders of non-Christian faiths to a presentation on a moral theme by members of staff. The Wednesday service, led by the Chaplain, usually includes an anthem from the choir, a sermon, hymns and prayers. Holy Communion is celebrated weekly, in one of the twelve houses or the Lower School.
Confirmation
The College holds its annual Confirmation Service in the first weeks of the Summer Term. Pupils attend Confirmation Classes with the Chaplain throughout the Lent Term.
The Chaplain
Our Chaplain, Fr Robert Easton, joined the College in 2003. He is a graduate of Bristol University and University College, Cardiff, and earned a First Class degree in Theology from Oxford University prior to becoming a parish priest in the East End of London. He leads weekly assemblies in the Pre-Prep and Prep Schools, and teaches Religious Education and Latin in the Prep School and Religious Studies and Geography in the College. His Chaplaincy is located in the College's Main Corridor, where proper coffee and a friendly chat is always on offer.
Weddings and Christenings
Old Brightonians regularly return to College to be married, or to have their children baptised, in the Chapel. To discuss any Chapel-related matter, please contact Fr Robert.
