Clubs & Activities

The College believes that it is important for pupils to use their leisure time constructively and as such an extensive activity programme is on offer.

Housemasters and tutors encourage the boys and girls to get involved in clubs, societies and activities in order to foster the pupils talents and interests.

Backgammon Club

Backgammon is one of the oldest board games for two players. The playing pieces are moved according to the roll of dice, and players win by removing all of their pieces from the board. A game of tactics and probably a fair amount of luck.

Board Games

At present we have a selection of games for you to play such as scrabble, game of 2009 - "Dominion" to an old time classic "Mousetrap". There may be an opportunity to expand this collection upon pupil recommendations.

Bridge Club

If you would like to learn the complexities of bridge, then this is an opportunity not to be missed. There are many online sites that can develop your skills as well as the face to face competition with your peers. Expert guidance is provided.

Computer Game Building Club

Pupils will use the "Scratch" software to produce a challenging interactive game. They will look at online games in general, deciding on what features make it exciting and challenging to play. They will then incorporate these features into their own games. In time we hope to increase the different types game developing software with "gamemaker8" recently being acquired.

Debating Club

The Debating Club is an activity that involves pupils in discussing controversial and topical subjects. It encourages pupils to develop their skills and confidence in public speaking by analysing the important speeches of great orators and by looking at what makes for a successful public performance before engaging in one of their own. Pupils are encouraged to organise debates and make suggestions as to what they would like to debate.

Cake Decorating Club

An opportunity to express yourselves in a creative manner by decorating pre-baked cakes and "yes" you can eat them afterwards. A very popular activity and so there may be a waiting list to join.

Poker Club

There has been a global boom in Poker over the last five years. The top professionals play in big tournaments for millions of dollars. At the Brighton College Poker Club, we do not play for money. Everyone competes for their position in the league table, with prizes for the best at the end of term. Players will learn the skills required to become a winning player. When should one fold, call or raise? How often should one bluff? When should one bluff? As the term progresses club members will realise that the luck of the cards is only a small part of the make-up of a winning player!

Strictly Come Dancing

The ultimate mixed gender, social and recreational activities choice for male and female sixth formers. You will get to learn traditional partner dances such as ballroom, salsa and Latin and will be set choreographed routines which will culminate in a spectacular performance for family and friends who will decide on a Strictly Come Dancer Winner! Energy and enthusiasm are essential. Previous dance experience is not, but physically fit and sporty types should go for it as strength and stamina are a must!

Chess Club

A chance for beginners to grand masters to have a social game of chess, overseen by Mr Merrett, a county standard player. Clocks have recently been purchased to add a bit of spice to the games.

Creative Writing for the 6th form

This course will teach writing techniques, give you an insight into your creative process, and encourage novel ways to express yourself. An informal environment in which you can let your imagination run wild!

Drama Club

Pupils will get the opportunity to hone their dramatic skills and grow in confidence in a fun environment. Sessions will involve lots of theatre games, improvisation and script work with the aim to developing performance technique.

First Aid Club

Mr T Tighe will take you through a range of techniques that will give you a good basis on how to use first aid. it is possible if time prevails to pass a qualification relating to first aid.

Football Club

Enjoy a game of six a side football on the Hamilton Lodge astro pitches under floodlights. Consequently these sessions will run throughout the year in all weather.

General Swim Club

The emphasis will be on continuous swimming, providing pupils with the opportunity to burn off some energy for 20 minutes or so. Individual training programmes can be developed to improve the performance of the swimmers.

Golf Tuition

There will be a series of six lessons looking at all the fundamentals of golf such as long game, bunker shots, chipping and putting. The sessions will be held at the golf course, which is about 5 minutes away by minibus and you will be transported there and back.

Green Club

Learn some gardening skills as you transform an overgrown garden situated close to the College into a vegetable patch. All tools provided.

History in Film Club

We watch historically based films that you are probably unfamiliar with and ask questions such as: 'How realistic is the period portrayed? How effective is the acting? How could the film have been improved? The theme for this year is 'Children in History' and we assess: 'Hope and Glory' and 'Empire of the Sun', which are both set duringWorldWar Two, ' Lady Jane', the queen for nine days in the mid 16th century, 'kes', situated in the gritty industrial north of the 1950s, and the 'Butterfly's Tongue' which is based during the Spanish civil war.

Indoor Cricket Club

Turn up to the sports hall in games kit with your own bat if you wish and you will experience skill sessions, fielding circuits and indoor games.

Juggling Club

Even if you do not want to join a circus this may well be the club for you. Learn to ride a unicycle or keep all sorts of objects in the air with your juggling skills.

Junior Debating Club

Knitting Club

knitting club is a place where knitters of all sorts come together! it doesn't matter if you've never knit before, or if you are working on your next jumper! Come and work on different stitches and have fun.

Ludamus Club

A new, exciting lunchtime activity run by Miss Playfair for L3rd and U3rd who are keen to learn more about the AncientWorld. What was the life of a gladiator really like?Was Roman food tasty? How outrageous were the Greeks' parties?What do the spells in Harry Potter actually mean?Why are so many ancient statues naked? Who ran the first marathon?What was so important about the Golden Fleece? Who were the 300?What is decimation? Why didn't the gods and goddesses get on? How heroic was Hercules? What is an alibi?
All members of the 3rd form are encouraged to attend. Those coming on the trip to Naples will find it particularly interesting, since some of the sessions will be devoted to
investigating the Eruption of Mount Vesuvius, and the events of 24th August AD 79, and learning

Mandarin Club

Pupils can take part in Chinese activities such as calligraphy, Chinese board games, or paper-cutting. There will also be opportunities to watch Chinese films, and make friends in China through our link school in Beijing.

Network Gaming Club

This is a new activity, which will allow pupils to pit their skills against each other as they play a version of "open arena".The type of game may change as this activity evolves but if you fancy shooting people, then this may be for you.

Open Water Scuba Diving Course

Tuition is provided from PADi qualified Master instructors. There are two courses you can take, Referral open water and full open water. The Referral course is all pool work and all paper work, you just need to do four open water dives anywhere in the world to finish your course. The full open water is as above but with your four dives which are in Brighton marina with us. There is a charge for doing either of these courses. if you are already a P.A.D.i Diver we can arrange for you to advance onto other courses if you wish.

Science Club

This activity is open to all pupils who are interested in expanding their knowledge of the marvellous world of science. The activities we run depends on the age range attending, but past projects have included trying to find out if antibacterial soaps really work, looking at minerals and plants, and investigating new ways of conserving water in the garden. Project work can be entered for CREST awards (Creativity in Science and Technology); they are the science equivalent of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award scheme.

Sewing Club

Go along and do some stitching and chatting, utilizing the newly acquired sewing machine. Materials provided and Christmas presents can be made. Embroidery, Applique, Patchwork, Dressmaking, ipod covers, laptop cases, makeup bags.....
Whatever you want!

Shares For Schools club

Despite the hit taken by "The City" in recent years, there is still something alluring about the institution and the ability to make money by simply buying and selling shares. in this activity, lower sixth formers get the chance to use real money to buy real shares. "The Share Centre" sponsors the school £750 and the pupils raise the rest.The decision-making sessions on Mondays at 1.55pm are tense affairs because it is THEiR money that is on the line if things go wrong! They can't be too active in the market either because they pay real stamp duty (tax on share purchases) and real commission. Not for the feint-hearted!

The shooting Club

The College has a 20m shooting range within the armoury and this is an opportunity to learn how to fire a .22 calibre weapon. The club will run for 6 weeks at a time, with an emphasis on Health and Safety.

Squash Coaching Club

An opportunity for the junior players to be coached by the professional at Corals Squash club in Hove; ideal preparation for the senior squash squad or just a chance to have a friendly game. Transport is provided between the venue and the College.

Tennis Coaching Club

The coaching will be performed by the resident qualified coach at Badgers and will involve a package of 6 lessons between 4.30 to 6pm. There will be a charge of £38 per person for the tuition. All courts have floodlights and the sessions can run throughout the year.

Yoga Club

The word "Yoga" comes from Sanskrit. it is a Hindu traditional way of exercise by which we can make control on our body and mind. By doing yoga we can make our body physical and mentally strong. A nice way to prepare yourself for the challenges ahead.
