Dance

Dance at the prep school is an art form enjoyed by all. Whether it be participation in dance as part of the school curriculum in years 4, 6 , 7 and 8, enjoying dance classes in ballet, modern, jazz and tap as a member of the dance school or participating in dance routines for the annual prep school musical- Dance helps pupils to build confidence and self expression as well as teaching pupils how to collaborate with their peers and to build co-ordination in order to maintain fitness and remain happy and healthy throughout their school lives.

Curriculum Dance

Mixed gender groups in Years 4 – 6 participate in creative and educational dance classes based on Laban’s movement analysis. These classes are fun, encouraging freedom of expression by exploring physical skills and basic composition through task led improvisation. At Year 6, more complex routines are taught involving floor work and exercises that test strength and stamina. At Year 7 and 8, a stronger focus is on dance technique and pupils opt in as a games option. Choreographic skill is developed in varying dance styles to include duo and group work involving a variety of spatial relationships and choreographic devices.

Dance School

The Brighton College dance school has over one hundred and fifty dance pupils from the pre-prep, prep school, lower school and senior school. Pupils can opt to study for Royal Academy of Dance and Imperial Society Modern, Jazz and Tap Dance qualifications as well as participate in local arts festivals. There are over fifty two dance classes per week which take place in a state of the art dance studio on the college campus. It is a great way for pupils to enjoy extra curricular activities after school with their friends and to make the most of the fantastic facilities that the college has to offer.

Performance Opportunities and Examination Qualifications

There are many performance opportunities in dance. Dance school pupils often adopt key roles in the annual prep school musical during the Lent term as well as enjoying the spectacle and buzz of the annual dance show in June. The grand finale of the year is the annual dance performance at Speech Day in the Dome.

Dance Scholarships and Millennium Scholarships
