MCC Men and Women take on the College 1st XI
30/06
Sport(s): CricketThe MCC men took on the 1st XI last week and they fielded a very strong side with several OBs. Brighton were boosted by the return of Jethro Menzies who took the field for the first time since knee surgery. He didn't disappoint and took two early wickets. He was backed up well by all the bowlers including Milo Gough, Yass Bahemou, Jamie Thornely and Eswar Kalidasan who all took two wickets. The College put on a very good fielding display and the MCC were bowled out for just 143. In response, Brighton struggled to build partnerships but Adam Davies played a captain's innings (86) to put the team in to a winning position. His removal by former 1st XI captain Chris Grammar set up a nervous finish. Menzies stepped to the crease and finished the game off with a four and a six straight down the ground giving the 1st XI victory by 2 wickets.
In the inaugural match between the Girls 1st XI and the MCC women, the college put on a great display of cricket on the Home Ground. MCC batted first and some tight bowling at the start restricted the opposition to just 36 overs off the first 10 overs. However the MCC upped the tempo and despite wickets from Tabitha Worsley, Izi Noakes, and Camilla Bunce they set a good total of 116 runs. The 1st XI fielded very well and particularly reference should be made to Lucy Knott's direct hit run out. Brighton started their innings brightly with Adams and Unwin finding boundaries. The MCC bowled well and runs were coming hard to come by but Bunce and Silk put on 48 runs together to give Brighton a chance of reaching the target. The College needed 20 runs off the final two overs with Cawley and Noakes at the crease. Noakes found the boundary and Cawley ran well between the wickets but wickets fell in the final over and Brighton ended up 3 runs short. A fantastic game of cricket and hopefully the first of many exciting games against the MCC.
