Practical Matters

Getting here

We appreciate that, for some of our parents, it is not always possible to do the school run, morning and evening. We therefore offer a comprehensive bus service, in conjunction with Brighton & Hove buses and Mercury Travel, operating from Monday to Friday which delivers children to and returns them from Brighton College. Please contact the Admissions Office for details of routes, tickets and costs.

Admissions at 11+

Boys and girls sit tests in English and Mathematics in the January preceding the September entry. They also sit an Aptitude Test designed to look for potential rather than attainment hitherto. Most 11+ candidates are then called for interview after which a final decision is made. Results are notified to all parents at the beginning of March.

We naturally do all we can to make the entrance tests as friendly and good-natured as possible - for children and their parents! Further details of the tests are available on application.

Admissions at 12+

Occasionally, places may become available during the course of the year for entry into Year 7 or Year 8. Please contact the Director of Admissions at registrar@brightoncollege.net

Visits to meet the Headmistress of the Lower School

The Headmistress of the Lower School is always delighted to meet prospective parents and to offer a tour of the college. All visitors will subsequently be invited to a small social gathering hosted each fortnight by the Headmaster of Brighton College and attended by other senior teachers. This provides prospective parents with an opportunity to meet other parents interested in the college and also to ask any further questions that might have arisen since their initial visit. To arrange a visit, please contact the Director of Admissions at registrar@brightoncollege.net or 01273 704201/202.

Open Mornings

These are held each year in February, May and September.

Bursaries and scholarships

Means-tested bursaries are available at 11+. Further details are available from the Admissions Office. A small number of scholarships are also available, tenable for Years 7 and 8, and automatically renewed thereafter assuming satisfactory performance in the end of Year 8 tests. Details of fees are available from the Director of Admissions.

The school day

The shape of the week broadly follows that of the rest of the senior school. After registration and chapel or assembly (from 8:20 to 8:55) there are six 40 minute lessons in the morning (with a break between lessons 3 and 4) followed by lunch. Lunch time for the Lower School pupils is earlier than for the older pupils, to give the children some time to themselves whilst the seniors are still in class. They also have some time over lunch for relaxing or letting off steam before afternoon lessons begin. Each afternoon there are two lessons and an activity period. The activity slot allows Year 7 and Year 8 children a chance to opt into the same kaleidoscopic programme of activities enjoyed by the older pupils. Three games slots per week also allow for both recreational and competitive sport.
