'For ever let this place be a cry of despair and a warning to humanity', reads a plaque with emblazoned text, funnelling deep into the mind.
It is a sombre, sobering place: everyone knows the horrors that occurred within these barbed wired walls, yet still the atrocities remain hard to fathom.
And for our Lower Sixth, where this annual destination is a whole year-group visit, those feelings of remorse and repine stay with you upon departure from the Memorial and Museum.
We believe the Holocaust must have a permanent place in our nation’s and community’s collective memory. We honour the survivors still with us, and reaffirm our shared goals of mutual understanding and justice.
We must make sure that future generations understand the causes of the Holocaust and reflect upon its consequences.
It is imperative for all pupils to be vigilant in the face of discrimination, and so this trip is arranged to ensure they understand why everyone must be treated with the upmost amount of respect and kindness.
