South Africa 2006

null
Brighton College Prep School have just completed a highly successful cricket tour of South Africa. In 22 days, we played 10 games, with 9 wins and 1 defeat. It was an imaginative itinerary, starting in Cape Town and working north east in the steps of the Voortrekkers; Elgin, Beaufort West and Welkom on the high veldt before heading to the south coast to Port Alfred. We were able to enjoy different physical and sociopolitical environments with massive potential for tourism and education.

The Cricket

The highlights on the cricket field were our victories over Bishops in Cape Town and Graeme College, Grahamstown. Our leading run scorers, James Chapman and Adam Davies, added 164 and 195 for the 1st wicket in these two big matches; memorable achievements. Another player who batted with great consistency was Eswar Kalidasan, as well as taking 7-21 in Port Alfred, a performance that included a hat trick and a separate three wickets in four balls; a rare feat!

The Sights

The views from the top of Table Mountain on a clear day with hardly a breath of wind, as we had, takes some beating anywhere in the world. We also visited Robben Island, with Nelson Mandela’s cell stirring particular interest. ‘Kloofing’ in the Elgin mountains was exhilarating, while our visits to Addo National Elephant Park and Shamwari game reserve provided us with sights of 4 of the ‘Big 5’ and an array of other animals and birds. In the wilds of the Great Karoo, the lack of artificial light enabled us to experienced the true African sky at night, with its countless stars and constellations.

Townships

The educational aspect has always been an important element of Brighton College tours and to this end we arranged two Township visits. We visited Nyanga in Cape Town and Woolmer Township in Port Elizabeth. We were treated to musical performances in both, having toured the township to witness the harsh environment these children grow up in. We plan to support both schools we visited and set up an ‘Epal’ link. By providing both Townships with a 35 kilo bag of new clothes brought from the Brighton College uniform shop, we left them with a message that our promises were not idle ones!
