DT
Build a Bridge CompetitionDesign Technology at Brighton College Prep School is taught from years 4-8 and each year group will receive a double period lasting one hour ten minutes each week which will run all year.
The foundation courses are aimed at introducing the pupils to problem solving where they use design processes to solve problems and produce practical solutions. The three key areas are drawing skills, technological theory and practical work which the pupils will cover at different levels each year.
Design Technology has been established at BCP for more than twenty years and continues to be a very valued and popular subject with both parents and pupils alike. One of its main strengths of the subject is the variety and type work pupils undertake in all year groups. Through DT all pupils can become discriminating and informed users of products, and become innovators.
Baggage ChallengeMost of the pupils will continue their DT in the senior school as Year 9s. In Year 8 pupils of sufficient merit, ability and promise in DT will be chosen by the H.O.D. at the senior school to attend an interview and exam for a Scholarship award.
The subject has been able to run a Young Engineer’s club since 2003 to allow pupils to develop their skills and interests in a wider range of activities. This has been a great success. The Young Engineer’s club reached the national final of Build a Bridge Competition and was awarded 2nd place with four year 8 boys and a team of four year 8 girls reached the national final of B.A.A. Baggage Challenge competition and again were awarded 2nd place.
As a result of these successes B.C.P.S was awarded National Club of the month and a place in the National Celebration of Engineering grand final. This took place at the Old Royal Naval College, London where a team of two boys and two girls won the Royal Navy prize for Engineering success through teamwork.
At present the club is working on a competition to build an electric car and race for 6 hours this has involved working with a local school for the deaf. The main aim of the club is for boys and girls to have fun, and they do.
