PSHE

At Brighton College Prep School, the importance of a child’s personal, social and health education is evident throughout their time at the school, underlying everything that takes place within a school day. Elements of the PSHE curriculum are covered or addressed formally in a number of ways. These include:

  • Assemblies - both religious and non-religious.
  • Form time - the form tutor will address issues arising within the form group on matters of a pastoral nature.
  • Pastoral and disciplinary systems within the school.
  • The curriculum - links to PSHE have been identified within the scheme of work as a result of a cross-curricular survey carried out in 2003.

The school council, introduced in 2005, is now entering its third year. It is a highly successful way in which to enable pupils to have a say in how their school could be improved. Ideas are raised in form groups and the school council representative attends a termly meeting where all proposals are discussed. Successful items suggested by pupils last year include more water dispensers, playground equipment and lane ropes for the swimming pool. Year 8 pupils also asked to be allowed to stay in their block during break times. This is working very well, largely due to the fact that the pupils have ownership of the new rule. The 2007/8 council is now discussing this year's issues.

In addition every child receives a weekly PSHE lesson delivered by their form tutor who plays the key pastoral role in the child’s time at the school. An overview of the topics addressed in these sessions can be found on this website under the relevant link.

The scheme of work is enriched by a variety of visiting speakers and workshops including: the Children’s Fire and Burn Trust, the schools’ liaison police officer and a bullying workshop.

Policies for sex education and drugs education were revised in 2003, forming an important part of PSHE.
