Under 9 Football

The main football term is the Lent term, although football is taught throughout the winter season from September onwards. Teams are run from year 4 upwards. The younger children are taught in two weekly games sessions and play in small sided, competitive games on some Wednesday afternoons. In year 4 we run A, B, C and D teams whenever we can and in this way we manage to include all of the boys in a school team.

Development

The boys play more matches as they progress through the school. In year 6 the footballers take part in friendly games with other independent schools and also in the thriving Brighton, Hove and District Primary Schools’ competitions. Brighton College supports sport in the local community and hosts many of the local events in football, including 7-a-side competitions and Brighton Schools’ cup matches. In the last three years we have hosted the city’s under 11 cup final. Our head of department runs the district primary school football and the city’s schoolboy representative team at under 11. The school has strong links with the local centre of excellence at Brighton and Hove Albion.

Reaching Goals

We combine years 7 and 8 in games sessions and try as often as possible to arrange fixtures for A, B, C, and D teams. The boys are encouraged to reach high standards of skill and sportsmanship, but always the emphasis is on enjoyment. The under 12 boys play in the annual Ardingly tournament; the under 13 team plays in the National IAPS sixes. We also travel to London for tournaments and matches. Each year the school arranges a trip to a premier league football match. The boys have visited the St. Mary’s stadium and Stamford Bridge in recent years, witnessing some thrilling matches.
