Rugby

1st XV in action

Rugby is the main sport for the Michaelmas term, although the season continues through to the end of the Lent term. The boys start learning to play rugby in the Pre-Prep department from year 2 and this is built on in games in the Prep School. We are affiliated to the ESRFU and as such follow the guidelines laid down in the RFU continuum concerning junior players. Our U9 teams play mini rugby with 9 players on the pitch, the U10 and U11 teams play midi rugby with 12 players, whilst years 7 and 8 combine to play 15-a-side.

As a department we are firm believers in allowing as many of the boys to play in competitive matches as possible. To this end, we regularly put out A and B fixtures and on occassion have managed to play C, D and E matches as well. In order to further increase opportunities for the boys, the house rugby competition encompasses all those boys who would like to represent their house at the sport.

As members of the RFU, we receive tickets to some international matches at Twickenham. This is a good opportunity for some of our boys to go and experience the atmosphere of a top level match, as well as seeing rugby being played by some of the best players in the world. These trips are always very popular, (both with the boys and the staff who accompany them!).
