Sixth Form
A levels and beyond
In the summer of 2009, the Sixth Form achieved 95% A and B grades, beating the previous record from 2008 which placed the college in the Premier Division of Schools according to the Daily Telegraph and the top fully co-ed school in Britain. As a result, most pupils were again able to take up places at their chosen universities.
Sixth form students enjoy the opportunity to exercise more responsibility in helping to run the college through the houses and the prefect system. It is expected that all pupils will go on to university after their Upper Sixth year, although roughly a quarter take a gap year first, and the Sixth Form is seen as a transition towards higher education and independent learning. Sixth Formers have their own recreational area, attend lectures given by outside speakers; they are also given the opportunity to organise their own study lessons using the library and ICT facilities.
Most pupils in years 12 and 13 have a choice of 28 A level subjects to choose from. Typically they study four of the subjects shown below in their Lower Sixth year, and continue with at least three in the Upper Sixth. These subjects are offered in 4 timetabled columns, and we aim to give pupils a free choice of subjects as much as possible.
