Departmental Societies
Ancient Greek
If you are familiar with Latin or have studied some Classical Civilisation this may be an opportunity to ‘have a go' at something completely different and new. The club runs each term and we meet once a week to study this fascinating language. By the end of the term you should be familiar with the alphabet and able to translate paragraphs of simple Greek.
The Skidelsky Senior History Society
The Skidelsky Society is named after the Chair of the Board of Governors, eminent historian Lord Robert Skidelsky. The society exists to nurture interest and enthusiasm for History beyond the confines of the curriculum. Pupils, staff and guest speakers have the opportunity to deliver papers. A Skidelsky Essay Competition is held in the Lower Sixth, with a substantial book prize available, and Upper Sixth pupils are encouraged to share research on their individual investigations undertaken at A2. Although the society is aimed primarily at sixth form historians, the Society welcomes non-historians to meetings as well as enthusiastic Upper Fifth formers.
Politics and Philosophy Society
Some pupils study both of these subjects, one way or another, during A level lessons at Brighton College, but sadly there tends to be little time during these lessons, given the constraints of the modular syllabi, to go "off piste" and explore big issues that come up in every day life. This activity gives the older pupils a chance to bring issues to the classroom and discuss them in real depth with their teachers. These discussions really help to develop analytical and evaluative skills and so help the pupils with their UCAS interview preparation. There is also an opportunity through this Society to invite visiting speakers to the College, who can provide further expertise and in depth knowledge on issues relevant to these discussions.
