Bible Study

Away from the hurly burly of College life, here is an opportunity for everyone to relax over a cup of tea (and maybe a biscuit) and reflect on what the Bible has to say to us today. From well-known passages to less-visited parts of Scripture, we shall talk about our faith, our lives and our futures. Pupils will have the chance not only to engage in spiritual matters but also ask the question "More tea, Vicar?"

English Language and Culture

Calling all overseas students! Have you ever wondered why the British love queuing?  Is there life north of Brighton? Does anybody really say "It's raining cats and dogs"? Learn more about the people, the places and the language of the country you've come to study in. This activity will be a lively mix of discussion, reading, and language-based activities. All levels of English welcome.

Chi Kung

Chi Kung is an ancient form of meditation. It is based around  Taoist philosophy, but really it is much more about relaxation, improving posture and, therefore, getting fitter over the long term. This activity does not require any previous experience or, indeed, a high level of fitness. All you need to do is bring a pair of trainers!

Critical Thinking

In this world of examination league tables lessons can be very syllabus based, through necessity. This activity gives you the chance to take a step away from that and think critically. Pupils will be discussing various current issues, in the news and other fields. After an initial introduction, this activity will be very much pupil-led in terms of the choice of topic. You will develop your analytical and evaluative skills which are highly valued by universities and employers, whatever subject you decide to study.

Croquet Club

Croquet is often perceived as a not too strenuous pastime for the upper class, with its hoops and mallets, but it is more popular than you would think across the country and is not as sedate as one would expect. It was even included as an event in the 1900 Olympic Games.  The Deputy Prime Minister's croquet playing in May 2006 hit the headlines, and this club has been a popular choice with the U6 Politicians as well as younger year groups.  The "roquet" can be a very violent play, and its use can see you advance much more quickly than your opponents. Come and have a go on the Quad Lawn every Friday!

Debating Club

The Debating Club is an activity that involves pupils in discussing controversial and topical subjects. It encourages pupils to develop their skills and confidence in public speaking by analysing the important speeches of great orators and by looking at what makes for a successful public performance before engaging in one of their own. Pupils are encouraged to organise debates and make suggestions as to what they would like to debate.

Logic Club

What is good thinking?  What is an argument?  How do we assess the success, or otherwise, of an argument?  If P then Q, and we assume not Q, must we accept not P?  It may surprise you to learn that there are some very simple answers to these questions.  In attending this club you will be introduced to symbolic logic, (the branch of philosophy dealing with the basic ‘rules of reasoning').  You will learn how to become a precise and rigorous thinker, how to expose the fallacies in the reasonings of your peers and how smash to atoms their arguments.

French G+T Club

The current government is keen to highlight those who are "gifted and talented" in each school and then give them a chance to push on and really show what they can do. This activity has been set up to give Brighton College pupils who fall into this category a chance to make real progress over and above what they are doing in their lessons.  Pupils will be expected to develop their creative skills and really push themselves to see just how far their talents can take them - a real challenge for the more able linguists in the school.  So, if you want to challenge your communication skills, read and discuss a book, create poems, play on words and charades in French, or simply discover the culture in more detail then come along with an open mind!

Poker Club

There has been a global boom in Poker over the last five years. The top professionals play in big tournaments for millions of dollars. At the Brighton College Poker Club, we do not play for money. Everyone competes for their position in the league table, with prizes for the best at the end of term. Players will learn the skills required to become a winning player. When should one fold, call or raise? How often should one bluff? When should one bluff? As the term progresses club members will realise that the luck of the cards is only a small part of the make-up of a winning player!

Strictly Come Dancing

The ultimate mixed gender, social and recreational activities choice for male and female sixth formers. You will get to learn traditional partner dances such as ballroom, salsa and Latin and will be set choreographed routines which will culminate in a spectacular performance for family and friends who will decide on a Strictly Come Dancer Winner! Energy and enthusiasm are essential. Previous dance experience is not, but physically fit and sporty types should go for it as strength and stamina are a must!

The Good Life Society

Ever wondered what the aim of human life is?  Do you lay awake at night wondering what it's all about?  Does the question ‘What is true happiness?' grip you?  If your answer to these questions is ‘yes' then why not come along to this society and explore a range of philosophical and ethical questions about the value and meaning of human life.  If your answer to these questions is ‘no' then shame on you, you really must join this society.  You won't need any prior knowledge to join this society, just a desire to begin the search for life's meaning, as well as a willingness to have your own views scrutinised, and perhaps changed.
