Alexander Centre Virtual Tour
Virtual tour

A warm welcome to our Brighton College Art pages.

This subject is obviously visual but equally is also a potent language.

"Art is the voice that mirrors ourselves and out times",
and
"Art is a companion with whom one may walk a great part of life's journey".

These maxims by Winston churchill encapsulates our character and our strength from Art as teachers operating in the Alexander Centre for Visual Art. This is very much passed on to our pupils.

Art is the only way to run away without leaving home. Art fosters the imagination, awareness and self expression of our pupils through a response from experience and memories. The subject brings awareness, confidence and both intellectual and manual skills.

Our primary aim in The Alexander Visual Arts Centre is to create an environment with a vital artistic life emphasising both tradition and contemporary innovation, for pupils to create quality work and in doing so learn much about themselves.

The Art Department at Brighton College comprises of Fine Art disciplines (Painting, Sculpture, Printmaking, Drawing and Collage) and Digital and Manual Photography. The study of Art History and Appreciation is taught alongside these disciplines within a contextual framework.

Teaching and learning about Art promotes awareness, self-expression and confidence and allows opportunities to distill, enrich and transform young lives and this is promoted in a stimulating, demanding and optimistic environment in which to work.

Our departmental motto is "Abeunt Studia in Mores", which means "Studies Pass Into the Character".

The pursuit of excellence is the cornerstone of the Art Department Philosophy.

The Art staff are comitted to offering a stimulating environment for a wide range of Art and Photographic practices and we set high but achievable standards for pupils’ work and behaviour with the aim to develop each pupil so that they can reach their full potential.

We promote disciplined study in an informal atmosphere and create a dynamic and creative centre of learning.
