Instrumental and Singing Lessons

Over 40% of pupils learn at least one instrument at school or have singing lessons.  Lessons are available on all orchestral instruments, harp, voice, piano, organ, classical and electric guitar, taught by a highly skilled team of 38 visiting teachers.  Many pupils begin learning an instrument for the first time in the 4th form and some take up a second instrument.  Music scholars learn at least two instruments.

Lessons are 35 minutes long and take place on a rotating timetable excepting sixth formers whose lessons are at a fixed time.  Thirty lessons are normally given over the course of a year.  Pupils are encouraged to take part in ensembles and performances in and out of school whether individually or in houses or other musical groups.  Examinations in the form of grades with the Associated Board or Guildhall/Trinity are encouraged and the school is an examinations centre each term.
