The Arts

Transcendence, Joy, Dedication

Visual Arts, Dance, Drama and Music are not Brighton College’s fringe interests but some of its defining characteristics. The Arts help make the whole college a better place and bring the college community together in a way that nothing else can.  The celebration of excellence can provide pleasure and enduring memories, and lift people’s vision beyond the confines of the insitutionalism of school.  The arts help performers see themselves as more than pupils and give audiences a glimpse of something transcendent.

Each Arts Department here has its own particular emphasis and philosophy but all work closely together, being committed to the pursuit of excellence as well as provision for all.  This is shown by the combination of large and small events that are sprinkled through the College Calendar.  The bigger events, real landmarks in the school year, are the November Musical, the Christmas Carol Service and Concert, and the Summer Dance Show.  These are mass events and anyone can be involved with them.  Through the year, there are also such events as tea time music recitals, dance assemblies, informal evenings of plays directed by pupils and more.  We all aim to provide opportunities for pupils to become artists.

Each Department is also committed to working with professionals, to enrich the pupils’ artistic vision and enable them to aspire to greater things.  Students of the Arts at Brighton College will be able to work with professional artists, composers, musicians, actors, directors, choreographers and dancers and through this they will have their horizons broadened, gaining a view of artistic development in the wider world and the heights to be attained.

The separate web pages for each Arts Department will give you more information.
