The Biology Department

Mr Oliver Peck BSc, PGCE
Head of Biology. Previously, he taught at Ampleforth College in North Yorkshire before which he studied for his BSc Biology and PGCE at Leeds University. Since coming into teaching, he has had many interests but particularly enjoys immunology, human physiology and evolution. His interests are not solely in biology and can often be found with his nose in the physics articles of New Scientist or Rugby World.

Mr Martin Vaughan Lewis BSc (University of Liverpool)
A widely-travelled man of the world, he has popped up all over Europe in Latvia, Azerbaijan, Serbia and Montenegro, Vietnam, Croatia, Sweden, Italy, Denmark, France, Belgium, Spain, Austria, Germany, Switzerland as well as in Thailand. He is a graduate of Zoology and has a specialist interest evolution of behaviour, citing “fluctuating asymmetry and the science of genetic fitness for sex” (he will tell you more if you come here for A levels). Claim to fame: his most adventurous hobby is bull running; he once wrestled a bull to the ground in Tudela del Duero.  A major collector of music.

Mr Matthew Reeve BSc (University of Newcastle)
Matthew arrived at Brighton College in September 2007 following his degree in genetics and PGCE at the Univeristy of Newcastle. Prior to university, Matthew lived in Northern Ireland and was a pupil at Portora Royal Grammar School. He is especially interested in transgenic organisms, gene therapy, evolutionary biology and ecology. He also enjoys a variety of sports, such as rugby and cricket, and anything that involves being outdoors. He is also a keen traveller having spent time in Australia, Denmark, Italy and Portugal.

Mr Matthew Wiseman BSc
Matthew is the antipodean member of the department, spending a year at the school from Australia.  In his early months at the college Matthew taught biology and psychology, but for the Michaelmas term will be teaching biology only.  Matthew has been a very valuable addition to the team.

Alexia Walker
Our new Director of Cricket, Alexia will be joining the department to teach biology from Loughborough in January 2010.

Mr Mark Davies BSc
Mark is the biology lab technician. He read biology at Greenwich University where he helped create a new method for cell DNA extraction for his final year project. He also helps to run the Brighton College Travelling Science show which tours local primary schools & takes part in the yearly Brighton Science Festival. He enjoys looking after snakes and other exotic animals (and biology teachers).
