Inspection Report: Business Studies
In lessons, pupils often demonstrate good, at times very good, understanding of terminology and theories. They are able to inter-relate and manipulate issues, recognising the complexity of modern businesses.
Pupils often make good progress, with topics effectively reinforced in class. Pupils build up an array of analytical tools which they are comfortable switching between.
The quality of learning is always satisfactory and frequently good. A positive ambiance prevails in class, with pupils keen to do their best.
Teachers are enthused by their subjects and convey this enthusiasm by developing an extremely supportive atmosphere in class. The needs of all pupils are met and the clear presentation of material and the use of thoughtful role play scenarios help develop understanding. Much teaching is animated and exciting but this is balanced by a more reflective, measured style in other lessons. High teacher expectations and the encouragement of pupils to participate and engage with the subject are common to all lessons. Pupils notes are supported by carefully selected handouts, and extra revision sessions are well attended. The use of ICT is effective where available.
Pupils participate enthusiastically and effectively in the Young Enterprise Scheme.
The department is located in an attractive environment. The quality of management is sound. The head of department leads the department exuberantly and his infectious enthusiasm and desire for pupils to do well rubs off on all. The budget is adequate and appropriately allocated. Formal meetings are held regularly, and the small office allows for daily informal contact, building a sense of common purpose.
