Trips
The Business Studies Department runs trips each year and in the past we have visited The Body Shop Headquarters, Parker Pen Factory and Newsquest. In October 2009, we have plans to attend a presention and Q&A session at the Bank of England in London, followed by a short visit to Neilson Holidays in Brighton Marina during the first half of the summer term.
The L6th reading trip to Barcelona, in June 2008, was a great success, encompassing tours of a national newspaper, a winery and the city's transport headquarters.
In June of this year we stayed nearer to home, visiting Thorpe Park, where we were introduced to the intricacies of running a highly seasonal business and its attendant staffing problems, followed by a great day at the Park. A trip to London followed, incorporating Fuller's Brewery, one of the last family run breweries in the UK, and a tour of the London School of Economics, which gave the pupils an insight into what it would be like to study one of the Social Sciences at this prestigious university.
We plan to run a similar trip in June 2010.
Visiting Speakers
We have numerous visiting speakers from all walks of business presenting a variety of topics: ‘Barclays Sponsorship of the Premier League’ (along with 2 free tickets to a premier league game of your choice!), ‘The Power of Advertising’, ‘Starting your own Business’, ‘The Budget’ and ‘Brand Management’ have proved popular in the past.
Two years ago we held a Business Studies Conference where the keynote speaker was Ian Marcuse the then Chief Examiner for AQA Business Studies. This year we have Malcolm Surridge (the current Chief Examiner AQA Business Studies) coming to give the U6th a few tips on exam technique and on the more tricky areas of the syllabus prior to their final examinations in June.
