Inspection Report: Design Technology

Pupils achieve high standards throughout the College and in examinations in relation to their abilities.

Pupils' attainment in work is good relative to their age and ability. The standard of written assignments and coursework is good, and enhanced by ICT. Drawing skills are good, and pupils use computer-aided packages to produce clear and well presented designs. Project work is finished to a high standard.

Pupils' progress is good, evident as pupils move from creating colourful pinball games and bookends to more sophisticated projects in Years 10 and 11. A three-dimensional scrabble game in wood and Perspex reflected on the increased design and practical skills.

Pupils are well motivated, involved and engaged. Independent research through books, the internet and visits is given a large emphasis in the sixth form.

The quality of teaching is very good, and in half the lessons observed it was excellent. Theory periods use a variety of approaches. Questions from individual pupils are used to involve the whole class, and a good knowledge of pupils' previous education and knowledge is evident. Feedback to pupils is a good blend of criticism and encouragement. Homework is explained and verbal explanations follow thorough marking. Written work is clearly corrected, and reports to parents are positive and informative.

The department's documentation is clear and thorough, reflecting the organised and effective management of the head of department. Schemes of work are accessible and sensibly adjusted for those pupils who do not follow a full course of the subject in Year 9. Teachers are supported by an associate teacher from Brunel University who is used effectively to tutor small groups during and outside lessons.

Well planned updating of resources has taken place, all of which are organised by a full-time technician.
