Being Head Of Fenwick

Making good friends
What does it mean to you to be Head of Fenwick?

I've been in Fenwick since Fourth Form so it's become a large part of my life.  As Fenwick is the only girls' boarding house at Brighton College it is unique and there is definitely a very strong bond within the house.  It is a place where you make lasting friendships.  I love it how the year groups are integrated - it really is like a big family! I'm very proud to be spending my last year in the boarding house as Head of House and I'm looking forward to making this year the best so far!

What do you hope to achieve as Head of Fenwick this year?

Fenwick is such a vibrant and happy place and I'd like each individual girl to feel responsible for creating such a positive atmosphere. I hope I can encourage the girls to represent Fenwick in house activities and contribute to house life. I'd like to support the Fenwick girls this year and ensure that everyone's enjoying their time in the boarding house by being available and approachable. Whether it's representing Fenwick in house swimming, chess, netball, debating or just chatting with friends in your room all evening; being in Fenwick will definitely create great memories that will stay with you for your whole life!

Together since 4th form

What boarding activity have you enjoyed the most?

My favourite annual event in the House is Fenwick Slumber party near Christmas time.  This is a night in Fenwick that it is like a real sleepover, with 75 girls!  We all gather in the festively-decorated common room in our pajamas and enjoy a tasty dinner (usually consisting of pizza and ice cream, with a few healthy snacks in between!) It is tradition that the Fourth Form organise entertainment for the house; this could be anything from performing a play to preparing a quiz for us all to take part in.  During the week building up to the slumber party we have a Secret Santa within the house, leaving little notes and presents in our allocated person's pigeon hole.  On the night of the slumber party we reveal who we've been surprising.  I love the slumber party because it's nice to all congregate together before we disperse at the end of term.  It's a very festive event, with amazing house spirit and a lot of fun!

How has boarding influenced your studies?

Living at school definitely has its advantages when it comes to work!  The Library is a great resource and it is open until 7pm every night which has helped with research projects.  As boarders we always have access to a computer as there are plenty of computers in Fenwick Common Room, the library and the IT rooms, and wireless internet is also available for those with laptops.  The Sixth Form Centre is a good place to meet and discuss work set.  I studied Art at GCSE level and being able to work late in the art room was really beneficial as I had access to all of the materials.

In Fenwick we have allocated time for Prep which is closely monitored to ensure everyone is working - there is something therapeutic in knowing you're not the only one with mountains of work!  Although exam season is a daunting time, this is when being in Fenwick really makes a difference.  We receive not only encouragement from our tutor and housemistress, but from our friends as we motivate each other.  Being in the boarding house is good if you need to ask a question about work as you know there's always somebody around to help!  As a weekly boarder I don't have to factor in transport time to my day, which helps me to accomplish a lot in my busy schedule.  Also it is very handy having a bedroom at school as it is a base where I can leave my books and files and saves me from having to carry them to and from school everyday!

What is your favourite sport?

My favourite sport is netball.  Throughout my time at Brighton College I've represented four various netball teams and it is an extra curricular activity that I really enjoy.  I captained the U15 ‘B' team in Lower Fifth and I now play for the Second team.  By playing netball twice a week in games sessions and attending regular training, I have received a lot of helpful coaching advice.  This has helped me develop my skills which I can put into action when playing competitive games at the weekends.

What subjects are you taking for A Level?

English Literature, History and Religious Studies/ Philosophy.

Place of Birth: Sydney Australia - yes, we are an international boarding community.
