Ryle
The Ryle CrestRyle House is one of the six boys’ houses of Brighton College and is situated at the front of the college on the eastern side of the Dawson building on the 2nd floor. The house overlooks the central school quadrangle to the north and Eastern road to the south. There are currently 73 day boys attached to Ryle, ranging from the ages of 13 to 18. The colours of Ryle are gold and black and this can be seen on the boys’ ties and rugby shirts, giving them the appearance of wasps. The symbol of Ryle, inspired by the architectural style of the windows, is a gothic shaped ’R’.
Pupils arrive in the mornings in Ryle to be registered by their tutors. They then gather their belongings (which are stored in lockers) and head off for chapel on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and then to lessons. Every Thursday there is a house Assembly for notices, followed by a speech delivered by a member of staff or one of the boys. The Head of House has the final word. Most of the school’s administration and communication is done through the house.
The house is divided into various studies in which the pupils can complete homework. There is also a sports’ locker room for changing, a toilet and shower. Finally, there is a common room for the boys to play pool, table tennis and table football during break times.
