Inspection Report: Information and Communication Technology

Pupil attainment in ICT is high at all ages.

AS and A levels were first entered in 2000 and have shown a steady improvement in grades. Attainment at A level is good in relation to pupils’ abilities.

AS and A level pupils' attainment in lessons is in line with expectations and they show a high ability to comprehend visual presentations and to link the work to real-life situations, as in the visit to a national travel agent based locally.

The pupils work enthusiastically and concentrate on the tasks set without fail, showing a high degree of motivation. During question-and-answer sessions in Years 12 and 13 they made very positive contributions, communicating ideas with skill and efficiency and showing good concentration. During skills-based lessons, pupils wait patiently if they need attention from the teacher. They often offer one another useful and generally constructive advice. The very capable pupils work independently in lessons and are often performing at a level well above that typical of their age.

The quality of teaching is very good for all age groups. Considerable time and effort has been expended in producing resource material which makes full use of projectors and interactive whiteboards. The level and pace of lessons ensure that pupils remain properly engaged in their work. Teachers have a detailed knowledge of their subject and plan lessons carefully. They have a good rapport with their pupils and give good intellectual support at all ages. Problem solving is encouraged through collaborative working. Marking is appropriate, and encouraging and constructive comments are made on pupils' work and on reports to parents.

Leadership and management of the department are very good. The department has three main teaching rooms and an office. Two rooms are devoted to the ICT curriculum and the third is made available to other departments. A rolling replacement programme ensures that departmental computers are kept up to date.
