French

All pupils in Year 9 learn French and follow the Expo 3 Rouge coursebook which has scope to build on the vocabulary and grammar studied for Common Entrance, whilst allowing pupils to develop their competence in French to face the GCSE examinations.
The progress of students is carefully monitored by regular vocabulary tests and assessments in order to track the students in each of the key language areas – Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing.

In years 10 and 11 students continue with the Expo course to sit GCSE at the end of year 11. We take the AQA examination at GCSE level, which requires 3 pieces of coursework and oral presentations on subjects covered during the course, such as school, holidays, family and friends.

At A level we follow the Edexcel course and select the coursework option at A2.
In the Lower 6th, pupils prepare an oral presentation on an aspect of France or its culture which interests them and also prepare for written examinations in reading, listening and writing. Lessons are conducted largely in the target language and each week students meet with the French assistante to develop their oral skills in small groups so that their spoken French improves greatly during the course. At A2 level students continue to develop their knowledge of French language and culture and enjoy debating a wider range of issues in preparation for their oral test. They will also select two specific areas of study for their coursework, which encourages independent research and thought.

Many of those taking French will take part in one of the trips. Those studying for GCSE will be invited to take part in a visit of the south region in Cannes and those taking A level will have the opportunity to visit Paris, to practise their language skills and appreciate French culture and history.
