Inspection Report: Music
Pupils' attainment in work observed is high in all lessons and very high in some lessons. Use of technical language, composing and ICT skills are all advanced. Pupils are responsive to being challenged by teachers to think through their answers and many have highly developed keyboard and instrumental skills. Progress of pupils is rapid in all aspects of listening, composing and performing.
The quality of learning and behaviour is very good in almost all lessons and never less than good. Pupils are highly motivated and focused on task; always confident to ask questions to seek clarification. They are competent learners whether working independently, in pairs or as a class group and are responsive to one another. Relationships are good at all times and pupils are supportive and encouraging of one another.
Teaching is very good and tasks are made clear, with differentiation used extensively in lessons. All teachers have a high degree of musical knowledge and skills, together with a very good grasp of the examination requirements. Lessons are well ordered, and pupils are stimulated by good pace and a variety of approaches. Planning is very good and related to the scheme of work with clear curricular objectives. Resources are well chosen and the teaching provides very good opportunities for the development of both theory and practical aspects.
Music permeates many aspects of school life providing rich spiritual, aesthetic and cultural dimensions. Exceptionally high standards of instrumental and vocal performances are evident in assemblies, chapel services and the extensive concert opportunities. Success in Associated Board examinations and the national chamber music competition is testament to the exceptionally high standards. Great emphasis is placed on team work and individual and collective responsibility in every age group.
Large numbers of pupils receive high-quality peripatetic lessons and pupils of all abilities are involved in the many different instrumental and vocal groups. Pupils are exposed to a wide variety of styles and cross-curricular links exist with other schools and colleges. Professional musicians provide excellent master-class opportunities.
The chapel, Hordern Room and Great Hall provide very good concert facilities.
The music department is very well led by an exceptionally successful head of department, a highly effective deputy and the other part-time teachers of similar quality. Roles and responsibilities are clear and communication and planning are good through regular departmental meetings. The department is well served by a very capable music administrator who provides excellent support. The department has a very clearly defined development plan.
