The trip to Parliament

Every year, usually in March, the department takes the upper sixth politics students to the Palace of Westminster.

In the morning, whilst the chambers are empty, the students get the chance to see both the House of Commons and the House of Lords. In fact, they are given the full guided tour by one of the Sergeants of Arms; their morning job when the House is not sitting!

After the tour, the students get the chance to meet Des Turner, the MP for Brighton Kemptown. He gives them the low-down on what happens at the Commons, and then answers any questions the students might have.

Finally, the students have the chance to see the House of Commons in action! They get to sit in the visitors’ gallery at Question Time in the main chamber – to see democracy at the coal-face!
