The Internet and PSHE

The arrival of interactive whiteboards in a number of PSHE classrooms means that the Internet is now a fantastic resource for us to use in the teaching of PSHE. As well as the books the students all use, the video resources and the practical teaching tools the department has we also make use increasingly of the internet as a key resource.

There are a number of sites, which we have found to be of particular help. These include:

Fantastic for some of the teaching of active citizenship, and as a general site for finding out more about how things work - the site has a huge amount of information, and provides a real insight into some of the more intriguing questions students may have.
A site, which from September 2005, the school will be paying a subscription for, and which has some valuable, and up to date resources on it created by Channel 4 on a range of issues.
A fantastic site for the teaching of sex and relationships aspect of the course in the L5. We have found this especially useful when the students are preparing "power point" presentations on Sexually Transmitted Diseases, and the site is used by Sister Vernon in her delivery of this aspect of the course.
A very good website for giving detailed information about a huge range of drugs, their effects, associated risks and the issues regarding their use and the law.

A number of the sites above may be used by students, when set a particular task by a member of staff in the department.

Other agency sites that have been very useful in the delivery of our PSHE programme are linked below, the sites are used by staff in the preparation of lessons, and not by students:

The family planning clinic provides some very good resources for the delivery of our sex and relationships aspect of the course, and also has some advice on abortion, which may be touched upon in the delivery of the morality aspect of the course in the U5 year. A number of booklets produced by the fpa are held by the PSHE Department and will be available for parents to take at the 4th form and Sixth Form induction evenings. These may be helpful for discussing specific issues with students.
Relate offers advice especially on relationships, and the website has given some direction for the delivery of our divorce and separation aspect of the U5 course.
This is an agency that a number of PSHE staff have been trained by to help in the delivery of the L5 "drugs" section of the course. They send a regular newsletter updating the Head of Department on developments in the drugs arena, and this helps us to ensure we are providing the students with the most up to date information we can. This site also has a number of very useful links to other sites, providing useful information on drugs, their effects, and legality. The drugs policy in the school is very clear, and it is vital to us that we provide the students with as much accurate information as possible about the risks and realities of drug use.

The following links are all detailed and useful in different aspect of PSHE.

There are of course other sites the school uses, but this just gives a flavour of the varied places the department goes to get resources from the internet. There is a wealth of material available on the internet, and the department feels it has a responsibility to use this. It is also aware that it needs to carefully look at the individual sites, and screen them before the students are encouraged to use them for their own research purposes. Internal INSET in the department has taken time to look at the sites and vet them thoroughly. The school has its own filters in place, which automatically vet a huge number of inappropriate sites.
