Biology
Welcome to the Brighton College Biology pages
There continues to be swift progress in the world's understanding of the life as a result of the recent advances in DNA technology and molecular science which have transformed the study of our subject. Pupils are continually being exposed to spotlighted media focus on biologically related advances. It is the aim of our department that we foster an enthusiasm and inquisitiveness as well as a broad knowledge and skills base that will equip them to debate and take an informed position on the many rapid technological, social and ethical issues that surround the scientific developments in this subject. As a result, the delivery of the syllabi occurs around a scaffold of practical work in which the understanding of the scientific process; namely the development of ideas and theories and the skills of analysis are fostered. Scientific questioning, understanding and the application of pupils' current knowledge rather than the regurgitation of simple facts are encouraged.
The Brighton College Biology department is made up of a range of enthusiastic and committed individuals who passionately believe in encouraging a respect for all living things and the environment and an understanding of our impact on the world. In order to do this, within and beyond the classroom we aim to educate beyond the scope of exam specifications, whilst still equipping the pupils in order that they can achieve excellent examination results. With this in mind, we run numerous fieldtrips, societies and talks, and ensure a number of scientific periodicals and up-to-date books are available to our pupils.
