Brighton College Golf

Member of staff i/c: Mr P Sperring

The college golf teams play fixtures in the first half of the Michaelmas and Trinity terms. Home matches are played at East Brighton Golf Club - a mature and challenging James Braid designed course with spectacular views of the South Downs. The college enters the HMC Foursomes and Singles and the ISGA matchplay knockout tournament each year, The Smarden Bell, at Royal Ashdown Forest Golf Club, and the West Sussex Golf Club Schools' Invitational.

In recent years we have enjoyed some success with the senior team making it to the National Finals of the ISGA Matchplay Knockout, played at Royal St George's and Prince's, Sandwich, winning the West Sussex Invitational handicap prize, fielding the best senior girl in the national HMC Singles Championship at the Berkshire, and our juniors have won best nett girl and boy at the ISGA Shire Schools' cup.

Matches against local schools take us to some top rated courses in the South East, such as Rye, Royal Ashdown Forest, Walton Heath, Hayling Island and The Addington. At the College we also offer pupils the opportunity to sign up for golf as a games option, which includes trips to the local course, the driving range or for tuition with local PGA professionals.

Perhaps the highlight of the golfing year is the tour to famous links and heathland courses of the British Isles. For instance, our West Country trip, taking in St Enodoc, Westward Ho and Burnham and Berrow, or to Wales to play Royal Porthcawl, Royal St David's and Aberdovey, to the West Lancashire coast for rounds at Lytham and Birkdale, North Norfolk to tackle Brancaster and Hunstanton, and Yorkshire, taking in Ganton, Alwoodley and Moortown.

Our elite golfers have gone on to win Oxbridge Blues, or scholarships to US universities, and on to the fledgling tours to try for their PGA cards.
