Pupils at Brighton College sitting the new, tougher reformed GCSEs this year were celebrating today after it emerged the most common grade achieved was a 9.
An outstanding 38% of all grades achieved were 9s, with ten pupils achieving at least nine grade 9s and another getting eight 9s in his reformed subject GCSEs plus the highest grade (A^) in the unreformed Further Maths.
Furthermore, out of the 732 pupils around the country who received 7 grade 9s or above nationally, 34 of them were from Brighton College.
Despite fears that pupils would suffer as the new style GCSE grading system bedded in, some 89% of all grades at the Eastern Road school were a 7,8 or 9. 7 is the equivalent to an A and 8 is the equivalent to an A*. The 9 score is handed out only to those who have shown beyond A* ability in the subject.
The school also saw 100% of grades between 7-9 in chemistry, physics, biology, dance, Spanish, Latin, art, Greek, Arabic, DT, German, Italian and Mandarin.
Head Master, Richard Cairns commented “The most common grade at Brighton College in the first year of these tough new exams is a grade 9. I am thrilled that so many of our pupils have achieved this new gold standard despite the introduction of tough new GCSEs. I am also proud of the fact that Brighton College is almost alone among leading independent schools to embrace the new GCSEs while other independent schools have stuck with the easier international GCSEs which still include coursework. I am delighted for our pupils but also very proud of my teachers. A school is only ever as good as its teachers.”
Ten children produced a perfect score of at least nine 9s, with one getting the highest he possibly could in all exams – eight 9s, and A^ and two A*s.

One particularly impressive young lady, Lily Olliver who sees herself just an "ordinary girl who happens to be deaf" achieved 10 9s and the top mark of an A^ - the equivalent of an A** - in Further Maths. Lily, who sits on the youth advisory board for the National Deaf Children's Society, said: "I'm in shock, I'm really pleased. It's a relief. I don't think being deaf should stop you in anything you feel you want to do. I don't want it to define me. If anything it caused me to work a bit harder and fight a bit more."
