The Creative Arts
At Brighton College, the creative arts give pupils the opportunity to think independently, explore ideas and develop their own visual voice in a purposeful and engaging environment. Through a broad and engaging curriculum, pupils are encouraged to experiment with materials and technologies, refine their techniques and approach their work with curiosity and imagination.
Working across a range of disciplines, pupils learn to observe closely, question creatively and take pride in the process of making. From initial sketches to finished pieces, the emphasis is on exploration, craftsmanship and the development of individual style, encouraging and supporting a range of artistic ambitions.
Art
The art department encourages pupils to engage thoughtfully with the world around them, translating ideas into visual form through a wide range of media, including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture and mixed media, developing both technical control and creative confidence.
We put emphasis on contemporary practice and theories that inform art, as well as practical skills. Lessons focus on experimentation and refinement, allowing pupils to explore different approaches while building a strong foundation in artistic practice. As they progress, pupils are encouraged to take increasing ownership of their work, producing outcomes that reflect their own interests and ideas.
Design and Technology
Design and Technology encourages pupils to think creatively and solve problems through making, with a focus on the quality and originality of ideas. Pupils consider functionality, aesthetics, user needs and sustainability as they develop thoughtful and well-crafted outcomes.
Working in a well-equipped workshop, pupils use both traditional tools and modern equipment to bring their ideas to life, often producing highly developed and, in many cases, award-winning work.
Projects guide pupils from initial concept through to final product, developing skills in design thinking, construction and evaluation. The emphasis is on precision, innovation and understanding how ideas can be realised in a practical and purposeful way.
Photography
Photography enables pupils to explore image-making as both a technical and creative discipline. Working in dedicated studio and darkroom spaces, pupils investigate all aspects of capturing an image, from experiencing traditional analogue processes alongside digital photography, editing and film.
Through a combination of practical work and creative projects, pupils learn how to compose, capture and manipulate images to communicate meaning, encouraging careful observation, attention to detail and a thoughtful approach to visual storytelling.
Pupils benefit from exceptional facilities that support creativity across a wide range of disciplines. Dedicated spaces for art, photography and design and technology provide an inspiring environment in which pupils can explore ideas, experiment with materials and refine their work.
Equipped with both traditional tools and modern technology, these spaces allow pupils to develop their skills with confidence and work in ways that reflect professional creative practice.
Opened in 2008, the Alexander Arts Centre is a large, loft-style studio and photography atelier. With an abundance of natural light within the space, pupils are able to explore their creativity in a variety of mediums. This includes access to a silkscreen printing room.
The RIBA award-winning Skidelsky Building houses our Design and Technology department. This is based in a multi-purpose workshop and design studio that incorporates the latest manufacturing machinery and equipment, as well as traditional tools and resources.
Located in the Alexander Arts Centre, our photography department caters for all mediums of image making. Pupils can engage with analogue, darkroom photography through to digital photoshop and film-making, alongside the more practical montage manipulation.
Pupils regularly present their work in exhibitions and competitions, providing opportunities to reflect on their progress and share their ideas with others.
Events such as the Leonardo Creativity Competition encourage pupils to think ambitiously and explore new directions in their work. These experiences help to develop independence, critical thinking and a sense of pride in the creative process.
