Music, Drama and Dance
At Brighton College, we believe that participation in the performing arts plays an important role in a pupil’s development. Through drama, music and dance, pupils are encouraged to build confidence, develop creativity and express themselves in a supportive and nurturing environment.
Whether taking weekly dance lessons, performing with our award-winning Chamber Choir, playing in a rock band in the House Music competition or taking centre stage in one of our many productions, pupils benefit from regular opportunities to perform. These experiences help to develop communication skills, build confidence and encourage thoughtful, creative self-expression.
Each year, we stage a wide range of musical, dramatic and dance performances, from informal concerts to large-scale productions. Pupils collaborate across year groups to create performances that celebrate imagination, teamwork and individuality. For many, these shared experiences become some of the most memorable and rewarding moments of their time at school.
Music
Music is an important and vibrant part of school life, with opportunities for all pupils to get involved, regardless of experience. From percussion groups and swing bands, to the award-winning chamber choir and symphony orchestra, we offer musical opportunities for everyone on all orchestral instruments, voice, classical and electric guitar, harp, piano and organ.
Regular concerts, competitions, events and informal performances allow pupils to build confidence and enjoy sharing their progress with others, while fostering a lifelong appreciation of music. Our pupils go on to study music at the Royal Academy of Music, Oxbridge and Trinity College, London, among others.
Drama
Drama provides a safe and imaginative space in which pupils can explore ideas, build confidence and develop strong communication skills. Through a range of productions and class-based activities, pupils are encouraged to take part, whether performing on stage or contributing behind the scenes.
Pupils develop key skills such as teamwork, public speaking and creative thinking within a supportive environment that values participation as much as performance. We also offer LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts) lessons, enabling all pupils to take part in drama, regardless of whether they pursue it as an academic subject.
Many pupils continue their interest in drama beyond school, with recent leavers going on to study at leading institutions including RADA, Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts and Bristol Old Vic Theatre School.
Dance
Dance at Brighton College is energetic, inclusive and attracts pupils of all abilities, from complete beginners to experienced performers. With classes in hip hop, jazz, ballet, tap, modern and contemporary, there is something for everyone.
From learning basic steps to performing at festivals and international competitions, pupils are supported by a passionate and professional team who encourage both technical development and creative expression. Regular opportunities to perform, including in our highly popular annual Dance Show, allow pupils to build confidence and enjoy being part of a vibrant and collaborative community.
Throughout the year, pupils take part in a wide range of performances, from plays and concerts to whole-school events that bring the community together. These occasions provide valuable opportunities for pupils to build confidence, work collaboratively and experience the enjoyment of performing in front of an audience. They also allow parents to share in and celebrate their children’s achievements.
Pupils benefit from excellent facilities that support creativity and performance, including dedicated spaces for drama, music and dance. These environments are designed to encourage participation, allowing pupils to rehearse, perform and develop their skills with confidence.
Our stunning 400-seat theatre is truly breathtaking, providing pupils with the opportunity to not only perform on a professional stage, but also gain theatre management experience.
With its professional sprung floor, floor-to-ceiling mirrors and ballet barres, our new and purpose-built Dance Studio is the perfect space for our budding dancers.
Our state-of-the-art Drama Studio provides the College with its own adaptable black box theatre. It provides an excellent teaching space, as well as being extremely adaptable for GCSE and A-level productions and smaller-scale plays and events.
In our RIBA award-winning Music School, our pupils enjoy professional rehearsal, recording and performance spaces.
