Come inside and take a look around Brighton College, where you can explore our incredible spaces and world-class facilities – all at the touch of a button.
Speech Day took place in the resplendent Brighton Dome, giving the College community the opportunity to come together and celebrate our pupils’ remarkable achievements. Pupils and guests were welcomed into the Dome by our excellent jazz group, The Blue Notes.
The Chair of Governors, The Rt. Hon. Lord Maude of Horsham, started proceedings, introducing the Head Master, who reflected on his first year of headship. It was a poignant, amusing and thought-provoking collection of memories and moments, highlighting some aspects of the year than can be ‘measured’, and others which are ‘immeasurable’. Sustained applause met the end of his first Speech Day report as Head Master.
The talent of Brighton pupils was showcased through a variety of dance and musical performances, and celebrated in the awarding of prizes for achievement and endeavour. The Chamber Choir sang two pieces: Seasons of Love by Jonathon Larson and O Sing unto the Lord by William Mathias, a piece they had performed at St Paul’s Cathedral in the Hilary term. The dance scholars also performed Abracadabra, choreographed by Ms Schofield, which featured central roles for the Upper Sixth leavers.
The Principal introduced this year’s guest speaker, Colin Jackson CBE, who spoke about his inspirational career as a world record-breaking athlete. He spoke about the need to always chase one’s dreams – in whatever field they lie – and about coming back from the inevitable setbacks that we all face in life at one point or another.
To finish the event, the Head of School, Ben, gave a speech reflecting on his time at the College and urging his peers to be true to themselves, rather than trying to ‘fit in’ or meet the expectations of others. He also spoke about his mantra of “never fail from a lack of effort”, acknowledging the inevitability that we all have to accept failure at times, but this is easy if we can honestly say that we have given our all. He spoke with authority, humour, humility and great maturity.
The Head Master concluded a wonderful morning by naming the new Head of School and Deputy Heads of School. Many congratulations to Cecily, our new Head of School, and to Abhi, Poppy, Martha, Harry and Ernest, who were appointed as Deputy Heads of School for the new academic year.
