Kemptown Community Hub

All of our pupils journeyed out into Brighton and beyond to volunteer their time to community projects.

From working with the National Trust to preserving local ecosystems; to park and community cleans across the city and surrounding areas; to visiting local care home residents and supporting charities, everyone played a part. 

Throughout the day, we saw so many examples of pupils collaborating and showing kindness, and many learnt new skills as part of working with the community and the environment around us.

Brighton College pupils and staff proudly participated in the Brighton Pride Parade, in what was was a truly inspiring event that celebrated inclusivity and diversity.

Our colourful and vibrant float was accompanied by our talented musicians and fabulous dancers, dancing their way through the city.

We were delighted to recently host a joyful event for local families and children. The afternoon was filled with fun and excitement, featuring everything from Bluey cupcakes and refreshing drinks to a bouncy castle, sand play area, delicious pastries and a wide variety of fun activities.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for such a memorable day.

We are providing loanable complete lessons for local primary schools. These encompass worksheets, practical equipment and teacher resources that cover specific areas of the Key Stage 2 curriculum, such as electrical circuits, evolution by natural selection, and light.

Brighton College have partnered up with local primary schools including Moulsecoomb, St Mark’s, City Academy Whitehawk and Queen’s Park, and look forward to continuing our collaboration with local schools, to provide additional enriching educational opportunities and resources for pupils.

We have been working closely with Team Domenica since 2014 to offer adults with learning disabilities the opportunity to have workplace opportunities.

Eight people have worked with us, with two more joining our operations department this year. Molly completed a successful work experience placement last year, and Issie has just started with us. She is working front of house in our café - her barista skills are top class!

World Polio Day was on the 24 October, so Errol, from The Rotary Club of Brighton, planted thousands of purple crocus corms assisted by our Brighton College garden team. This is in recognition of the purple stain used to mark vaccinated children’s fingers. We look forward to continuing our work with The Rotary Club of Brighton who support fantastic causes in the local area.

Our Prep School were thrilled to welcome hundreds of local families to several of our themed events. Children from local nurseries and primary schools enjoyed our Prep School events that included Frozen and Moana Dance Parties as well as Lego and Harry Potter Challenge Days.

Encounter Wellness is an innovative rehabilitation project that provides complementary therapies and social groups, including craft and gardening, to children and adults who remain unwell despite NHS treatment. It is led by Dr Johann McGavin, an NHS GP in the heart of Whitehawk.

For the past two years, Brighton College and Brighton College Prep School pupils and staff have been supporting this project, through our Make A Difference Days and weekly Community Service, transforming the inside and outside of St David’s Hall where the charity are based.

Our pupils have been running drama and singing sessions in local primary schools, which are run in small groups across all year groups. Every pupil at St Mark’s Church of England Primary School attended these sessions, split into small groups of 12 taught by four of our pupils, and an after-school club was started as a result of the popularity of these sessions.

We are looking forward to welcoming Queen’s Park School and St Mark’s School next term to use our theatre for their school productions.

We celebrated our annual Christmas Jumper Day on Friday, 6 December, and raised £3,700 amount for The Whitehawk Foodbank, The Whitehawk Foodbank provide three days’ emergency food and support to people in Whitehawk and the wider East Brighton area who are referred to them in crisis.

We were delighted to join in with the Kemptown Village Collective’s special two-day Christmas shopping enchantment. Our school’s jazz band helped to create a fantastic atmosphere to help raise money for the Santa Bus appeal that supports 12 local charities. We loved seeing Barulho and Drum & Blaze samba bands, who performed alongside lots of people late-night shopping! It was a fantastic event that helped our local high street.

On 4 December, we welcomed 60 members of the local community at our annual Tea and Carols event, including people from care homes, others from the refugee community, and some that are without a home. It was a fantastic event. Pupils loved chatting with our guests and The Chamber Choir performed a number of Christmas classics from the more traditional Ding Dong Merrily on High to Snowman by Sia. It was lovely to sing together and welcome in the festive season.
