Speech Day took place in the resplendent Brighton Dome, giving the College community the opportunity to come together and celebrate our pupils’ remarkable achievements.
Pupils and guests were welcomed by our awardwinning Brighton College Swing Band. The Chair of Governors, The Rt. Hon. Lord Maude of Horsham, started proceedings, introducing the Head Master, who reflected on the year just gone, focussing on the theme of hope. It was a heartfelt and thoughtprovoking collection of memories and moments.
The talent of Brighton pupils was showcased through a variety of dance and musical performances, and celebrated in the awarding of prizes for achievement and endeavour. The Chamber Choir sang Magnificat in C by Bryan Kelly, a piece they had the privilege of singing at The Chapel Royal, Hampton Court Palace. Members of the Hadestown cast performed Wait For Me. Fresh from their incredible success at the Royal Tunbridge Wells Festival and the All England Regional Finals, our dancers performed I Wanna Dance with Somebody.
The Principal introduced this year’s guest speaker, Sir Terry Waite, who delivered a speech that will live forever in the memory. The audience were rapt as he recounted the events leading up to his being taken hostage in Lebanon in the 1980s, followed by his experiences in captivity and ultimately his release and subsequent work. He spoke with great wisdom, poignancy and even humour about retaining our humanity in the face of unimaginable adversity.
