Four Lower Fifth chemists travelled to Kingston University in London to compete in the Downlands regional final of the Year 10 Chemistry Challenge, hosted by the Royal Society of Chemistry. This year, the final was expanded to comprise eight teams from other local schools, making the competition much fiercer than when it was between six schools in previous years.
Our team of Michael, Raphael, Vincent and Duncan, the top team from the preliminary round, braved many challenges, from identifying chemical unknowns and analysing the difference in materials between pennies pre- and post-decimalisation. They were then treated to a tour of the department, including a working university lab, whilst the results were being counted.
In a nail-bitingly close race, our boys emerged on top, Champions of the 2025 Year 10 Chemistry Challenge! A phenomenal achievement. The boys were well and truly in their element!
