This week our Upper Sixth moved on to the next stage in their academic lives with the launch of the Brighton UP programme, a unique course designed to prepare them for all aspects of university life.
As well as enjoying modules in their university subjects, the Upper Sixth this week had a fantastic keynote webinar from Dr David Starkey, who joined us via Microsoft Teams to speak about the implications of Brexit. With a whirlwind of a lecture, drawing the origins of the Brexit vote back to Henry VIII, and encompassing the Great Reform Act and prorogation along the way, Dr Starkey argued that the repression of a distinctly ‘English’ identity led to the vote to leave the EU in 2016. Dr Starkey described the questions from the Upper Sixth afterwards as ‘very impressive’, as they probed him on how the COVID-19 pandemic might impact Brexit, and his views on the separation of powers.
The Upper Sixth also enjoyed the option of eight question and answer sessions with Old Brightonians at our most popular university destinations, finding out everything from the best halls to live in to how to achieve an effective work-social balance. Next week’s webinars are just as exciting, with John Vincent, co-founder and CEO of LEON, laying out his vision of effective leadership, Angie Bass talking about documentary film making, a corporate careers round-table, and Marcus Smith and Joe Salisbury exploring the highs and lows of their careers in professional sport.
